Black History Month started out in 1926 as “Negro History Week” on the second week of February.

Black History Month was first proposed by Black educators at Kent State University in February 1969.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month. Since then, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
