State Police investigating deadly shooting at Port Allen motel

The family of a man shot to death last night by a West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputy is demanding answers.
NBC Local 33’s Crystal Whitman has the reaction from Yosef Richardson’s family and what Louisiana State Police are saying about the case.

Officials have not released information about why a West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputy fatally shot a man at the Budget 7 Motel in Port Allen.
The family identified the man as 38-year-old Yosef Richardson. The family tells us, police have yet to give a reason.

“We had to watch his body come out there on a stretcher just now. Instead of watching his body, we haven’t seen his body, police officers
turned their backs to us so we can’t see that body,” said Reynard Douglas, Richarson’s nephew.

Friday outside of the motel, things were pretty much quite. It was a stark contrast to 24 hours earlier when shots rang out. Richardson’s Mom
says the news of her son’s death caught her by surprise.

“This is a cover-up because in the first place if you’re serving a warrant, why would you go with your gun pulled?
Your gun didn’t discharge being in the holster because it’s supposed to be snapped in so that was not an accident.”

The West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office will have it’s side of the story too, but the investigation is ongoing. Public Information Officer Taylor
Scrantz with Louisiana State Police confirmed that a search warred was carried out at the motel.

A deputy discharged his firearm and struck a suspect. The suspect sustained fatal injuries.

We’ve also contacted the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office to get a copy of that warrant. We are told a copy could be released to us in a few days.
