Hammond, La. (WDSU)

The morning of Aug. 23, 1987, is one that longtime Hammond neighbors find hard to forget.

Selonia Reed was murdered. Her body was found in a car in the parking lot of the now-closed John’s Curb Market on East Thomas Street.Advertisement

And for 32 years, the case was cold and unsolved.

On June 21, a grand jury handed down an indictment and arrest warrants were issued for Reginald Reed, Selonia’s husband, and Jimmy Ray Barnes.

Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron said new technology with old evidence led to the breakthrough.

Barnes and Reed are locked up at the Tangipahoa Parish jail.
