I-10 shooting/carjacking suspect, shot by officer, is now in parish prison

News

A Baton Rouge man wanted for a shooting and carjacking earlier this month is now in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

28-year-old Gerry Byrd is accused of shooting a woman around 4:00 am on July 2nd, stealing her car and leaving her wounded beside Interstate 10.

Police said Byrd drove to a Woodville, Mississippi convenience store, entered holding two guns and “slapped around” a clerk. Byrd says a Woodville officer shot Byrd when Byrd moved toward the officer.

Byrd has had prior run-ins with the law. Months ago, Mississippi corrections officers released him following burglary and contraband charges. At the time he was shot, Byrd was wearing a state-installed ankle monitor.

Byrd faces a long list of charges including attempted first degree murder and armed robbery.
