Impairment is suspected in deadly crash that killed man from Baker


BAKER, La. (BRPROUD) – Tomas Grant, 56, of Baker was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Sunday night.

The deadly crash took place on LA Hwy 19 north of LA Hwy 423 around 7:30 p.m.

According to the Louisiana State Police, “the initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Grant was traveling northbound on LA Hwy 19 in a 2016 Mercedes E35.”

A 2020 Nissan Titan was in front of the Mercedes E35 when it was hit by Grant’s vehicle.

LSP says, “after striking the Nissan, the Mercedes crossed the southbound lanes of LA Hwy 19 and exited the roadway to the left.”

The Mercedes came to a stop after hitting a canal embankment and turning over.

Grant was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.

The 56-year-old man died at the crash scene.

According to the Louisiana State Police, “impairment on the part of Grant is suspected, and a toxicology sample was obtained from him for analysis.”

There were two individuals in the 2020 Nissan Titan at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Nissan Titan was wearing a seat belt and passed a chemical breath test.

Despite also wearing a seat belt, the passenger in the same vehicle was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, according to the Louisiana State Police.

The investigation into this deadly crash remains ongoing.
