Investigators determine arson to be cause of overnight fire on St. Gerard Ave.

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Fire Department was called to a reported fire overnight at a building on St. Gerard Ave.

Firefighters arrived at 3730 St. Gerard Ave. around 12:20 a.m. and found “fire coming from a window on the first floor of the vacant building,” according to the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

After searching the building, firefighters went to work putting the fire out with the help of seven total units, four pumpers and one ladder.

BRFD says, “Firefighters were able to contain the fire in a small storage closet on the first floor but the rest of the building sustained heavy smoke damage.”

It took firefighters 25 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The structure sustained $60,000 in damages.

Fire investigators concluded that arson was the cause of the early morning fire.

EMS and BPRD assisted the Baton Rouge Fire Department at the scene.
