BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– Like many local restaurants Jay’s BBQ is trying to stay afloat during the Governor’s stay at home mandate. Jay’s BBQ is trying to preserve nearly 70 years of history in the community.
The staff is focusing on how their restaurant began to get through these difficult times. Jay Prothro opened the restaurant on Government Street in 1954. “He was more passionate about the people than anything,” Sherwood Forest Location Owner Rick Newton said. “He just loved people and getting to know his customers over the years, he made a lot of life long friends in the process.
The barbecue restaurant quickly became a staple in Baton Rouge. “We have many tell us about going to Government Street when it first opened and still coming to see us today and bringing in their grandkids and great grandkids,” Newton said.
During this time, Newton’s restaurant is empty as they are only serving to-go orders. Newton said business is down but they are “hanging in there” for now. Newton expressed it is important for people to shop local businesses because they create a unique and personal experience for their loyal customers. Newton wants to thank everyone who has supported them during this time.
Jay’s BBQ is located at 5734 Sherwood Forest Blvd, Baton Rouge LA 70816. To-go orders are offered in the drive through between 10 am and 6 pm.
