KENNER, La. (WDSU) — The Kenner Police Department confirmed that a councilman was nearly run over in a Walmart parking lot while trying to thwart a shoplifter.

Kenner Police Department Public Information Officer Michael Cunnigham confirmed that last week councilman Mike Sigur confronted a man reported to have been fleeing with a friend who had shoplifted when the incident happened.

Police say Thomas Nasser went to the Walmart on Veteran Boulevard and was in the parking lot when his friend jumped in the vehicle after the shoplifting incident and tried to flee.

Cunnigham confirmed that Sigur confronted them when Nasser attempted to run him over.

Sigur’s arm was stuck during the incident.

Nasser fled the scene but was later apprehended by law enforcement, according to Cunnigham.

Nasser, was booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, hit-and-run driving and resisting police.
