A Laplace mother donated $2,400 worth of gift cards to the U.S. Coast Guard in the greater New Orleans area.

“These people put their lives on the line, and they would because of their oath. The oath said that they will protect the people of the United States and that comes with or without a paycheck,” said Jennifer Norris-Martinez.

Jennifer Norris-Martinez raised the money during a fundraiser over the weekend.

Her son is a Coast Guard member. So, she understands the importance of them getting a little financial help.

“I think that means a lot to them just to know that people are aware and concerned, and they’re not forgotten about,” she said.

Norris-Martinez coordinated with Seth Eury from the New Orleans chapter of the Chief Petty Officers Association.

She said she just wanted to help them out at a time when she felt it’s needed most.

“That’s a great way to reach out and make sure that the Coast Guard family here feels that love and sense of security that comes with just a little bit of financial assistance,” said Seth Eury from the Chief Petty Officers Association.
