ASSUMPTION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — With Memorial Day around the corner, law enforcement wants to ensure citizens are staying safe behind the wheel.
“Have a plan in place before you take that first drink,” Valerie Cox, Mothers Against Drunk Driving said.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving said over 13 thousand people were killed in 2021 crashes involving alcohol.
“We asked that your good time does not become someone else’s nightmare,” Cox said.
According to the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office 49, Cecil Mabile Jr. faces several charges, including DWI (driving while intoxicated) and hit and run. Deputies say he swerved into a different lane, colliding with another vehicle.
Authorities said those involved in the crash experienced minor injuries.
“DWI affects a lot of different things. It affects your license, a mandatory suspension of your driver’s license, depending on what period of time that is, depends on the circumstances, the blood alcohol level,” Lonny Cavalier, Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, Public Information Officer said.
Cavalier said Mabile has a repeated history of DWIs. His first offense was in 2015, his second offense was on May 2 and his third was reported on May 22. Mabile’s bond is set at $15,000.
“These people do create accidents that take or have the potential to take people’s lives,” Cavalier said.
Cavalier even mentioned some tips to consider before driving under the influence of alcohol.
“We do look for impairment, the order of alcohol is a big issue, any open containers are illegal. Don’t drink and drive. Designate a driver and if you can’t do anything else, just don’t get on the road,” Cavalier said.
