Local 8-year old to compete in national CrossFit event

CrossFit continues to expand here in the Capital City and now even children are getting involved.

From youth programs to summer camps, there’s been a growing trend. Tonight we spotlight one young lady’s journey from her parents’ gym to a national competition.

It started at the age of four, working out with Mom and Dad, just wanting to be like them.

“Air squats, burpees, dumbell snatches, pushups,” Brynn Catalano details.

CrossFit Ruckus owner Chase Catalano, Brynn’s father added, “Just started realizing that she’s watching everything that happens in the gym, and that she started to pick up a little plastic bar bell and started to mimic all the movements over and over with good form at that, so it’s hard to teach good form.”

It continues four years later, and the progress has been remarkable.

Brynn, “It makes me feel happy because you get to learn new things and it’s just fun. I just watch them and then whenever I can do that stuff, I try it and I keep practicing to where I can get it.”

Chase, “Working out with my daughter, side by side, is probably one of the best feelings I have. Being able to push, exhaust ourselves and give everything we have together is a pretty awesome feeling.”

This Spring, Brynn entered a global online cross-fit competition for her age range, and placed in the top 5, earning her a spot in this summer’s national championships in Atlanta.

Brynn, “I’m nervous and excited. a little bit of both right? Yeah.”

Chase, “To see that she placed so high was a great feeling and now to see that she’s got the invitation. She’s got the willpower and rive to get there. Since she found out she made it, she works out 4-5 days a week. She’s in here 2-3 hours just really digging in, embracing the whole process.”

Brynn: “I want to do first place and all that stuff.”

You think one day you’re going to be stronger than your Dad? (Shakes head yes and laughs).

Brynn: “I already beat him in a workout.”

And you can support Brynn. CrossFit Ruckus is selling T-shirts and sponsorships for her trip are still available.
