Local HR expert provides advice for businesses and job seekers during pandemic

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRProud) – Unemployment during the pandemic has caused many challenges for businesses and employees.

The labor force participation rate declined to 60.2% in April 2020—a level not seen since the early 1970s—then began a partial recovery in May 2020. The labor force participation rate was 61.6% in May 2021, 1.8 percentage points below the level in January 2020, before the pandemic and the economic recession.

CEO of Chief of Minds, Lakeisha Robichaux, says one of the many local businesses have struggled with is finding good talent.

“Revisit those policies and make sure you have good safety procedures,” Robichaux says.

In April 2020, the unemployment rate reached 14.8%—the highest rate observed since data collection began in 1948. In May 2021, unemployment remained higher (5.8%) than it had been in February 2020 (3.5%).

Those actively looking for work can simply start at home by making sure everything is in order before pounding the pavement.

“Right now is the perfect opportune time to take advantage of the job market. Brush up that resume and update your LinkedIn profile,” explains Robichaux.
