WALKER, La. (BRPROUD) – Covid-19 vaccines are at pharmacies across the state, but many people are being put on waiting list and now those wait times could be longer than expected.
Bernard’s Family Pharmacy in Walker has been busy providing people with the Covid-19 vaccine.
“It caused an increase work load trying to get everyone taken care of with the vaccines that we’re allotted” said Pharmacist, Bobby Holt.
All week, people who qualified under Phase 1-B and made an appointment were able to start the vaccination process.
“We finished the 100 doses we were allotted today” said Holt.
Now, they wait for the next shipment, but the question lingers when will it arrive.
“Our goal is to take care of everyone on that list, now when we’re able to do that we don’t know” said Holt.
Doctor Joe Kanter with the Louisiana Department of Health said, there’s a possibility the 107 pharmacies that received the first shipment will not get another one right away.
“We hope to be able to, but that’s far from assurance right now” said Kanter.
At Governor John Bel Edwards’ media briefing Wednesday afternoon, Kanter said there were 12 to 14 parishes that were left out of receving vaccines because pharmacies in those areas did not complete the enrollment process.
“Our first goal is to make sure that the distribution is equitable from a geographic and a racial-ethnic standpoint. Once we’re able to achieve that we’re going to try to re supply the pharmacies, but that is a subsequent goal” said Kanter.
As a waiting list builds up, Bernard’s Family Pharmacy is hoping for another shipment to continue serving their community.
“Hopefully, there’ll be more notice and there would be more vaccines available in larger quantities that way we can take care of a larger portion of those on the list that are waiting. That’s our hope and hopefully that’s going to happen” said Holt.
