ZACHARY, La. (BRPROUD) – A Zachary High School student is proving anything is possible, receiving $2.1 million dollars in scholarship offers and a full ride to attend the Ivy League of her choice.
Ashley Johnson is an honor student who believes dreams can take you everywhere and for her, it’s taking her to Harvard University.
Johnson maintains a 4.61 GPA, is a part of the marching band and was named Zachary High School’s Student of the Year.
“It’s definitely like head in the clouds, body on the ground type of feeling. When I’m just like walking to class and I like zone out a little bit and then I come back, I’m like I got into Harvard,” said Johnson.
In 2021, the Ivy League accepted a record low 3% of applicants. Out of the 57, 435 applicants only 1,968 were admitted and Johnson heads to Cambridge tuition free.
“I was so shocked because it said, parent contribution zero dollars, student contribution zero dollars. It’s about $300,000 dollars in total it’s just very crazy.”
She said, getting to this moment took family support and hard work.
“It was like the best moment ever. It felt like all of my hard work, all of my sacrifices just all paid off and culminated in that one moment,” said Johnson.
Her journey wasn’t easy, but she says it was one worth taking.
“There have been so many people in my life who looked at me and told me that I can’t, and I just refused. Don’t let people tell you that you can’t because you can,” said Johnson.
The schools that Johnson was considering include a who’s who of universities throughout the country:
