ZACHARY, La. (BRPROUD) — Police say a two-year-old Zachary child is in stable condition after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot Thursday night.

The Zachary Police Department said the child grabbed the gun from his mother’s purse and shot himself in the chest at 8:20 p.m. Thursday on Shaffett Lane. The child was taken by air to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Police said the child is currently in stable condition and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Earlier this month, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome shared a statement urging parents to secure their firearms after a four-year-old child died after finding a gun and shooting it in their face.
