BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge nonprofit is struggling to meet the growing needs of families this year and many families could go without for the holidays.

Nearly 250 families are still without a sponsor for this Christmas. Catholic Charities said they need your help to make this season special for those who need it most.

“We’re just not exactly sure what we’re going to do. We’d hate to end up having nothing for those families, but that’s the situation we’re looking at right now,” said Catholic Charities Executive Director David Aguillard.

He said normally around this time every family is sponsored.

“You know, we usually have about 400 or 450 families and we’re able to sponsor all of them,” said Aguillard.

But this year, a record-breaking number of people are in need of help this Christmas. That’s why they extended their donation deadline to December 9.

“We have over 600 families this year so that’s over a thousand individuals,” Aguillard said.

He believes a backlog of problems is causing the crisis.

“We had COVID, then we had a flood in 2021. We had IDA in 2021, we had a flow of refugees higher than expected, and right here in Baton Rouge everything that is reflected in our community,” he said.

On their wishlists, many families are opting to skip the glitz and glam and going for something they really need.

“You’ll find those kinds of families who are in desperate need of just basic household goods and necessities,” he said.

They’re asking for donations, but even if you can’t give, you can still be a part of that Christmas spark.

“You can bring the joy of Christmas, the joy of the coming of Christ to some of the families in need,” said Aguillard.
