BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) — A 34-year-old man was found asleep in his vehicle in the middle of an intersection after snorting heroin on May 14.

According to the arrest documents, when police arrived at the scene they found the driver, Daniel Varnado, asleep behind the wheel in the intersection of US 61. Varnado told officers that he was going home. After officials told Varnado to move his vehicle, he began driving the wrong way on US 61. Officers stopped Varnado again and took his keys from him.

Authorities say Varnado appeared to have a noticeable upper body sway, pupils were constricted and he spoke in a low, raspy tone.

Varnado admitted to officers that about 20 minutes before he was stopped, he snorted about “40 dollars worth” of heroin that he allegedly purchased at a nearby hotel.

The officer arrested Varnado for driving while intoxicated. According to the arrest documents, Varnado was arrested for driving while intoxicated back in 2015.

Officers noticed recent damage to the front corner of Varnado’s vehicle, which may have happened during a hit and run crash moments before officials stopped him, according to the arrest documents.

Varnado was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for Hit and Run.
