8-year-old child started house fire with matches on Monday

The Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to a house fire on Monday afternoon at 6103 Smiley Street.

The call to the Fire Department came at 5:21 p.m. and firefighters arrived at the scene in four minutes.

Upon arriving, Baton Rouge firefighters found a bedroom on fire.

Curt Monte of the BRFD said, the fire spread to the attic before firefighters were able to get the fire under control.

The fire was brought under control in around ten minutes and the home sustained major damage. 

The house was valued at $65,000 and as a result of the fire, suffered $50,000 in damages. 

BRFD determined the cause of the fire to be an 8-year-old child playing with matches.

Monte said, “the child was counselled and will be placed in the Jr Fire Setters Program to be monitored and educated on fire and fire safety.”

EMS, BRPD and Entergy assisted the The Baton Rouge Fire Department at the scene of the fire.
