Academy Sports + Outdoors gave 30 local students $100 gift cards to contribute to their back to school shopping.
The children were part of the Louisiana Youth Sports Network and the Gladiators little league football team. The team has 85 football players, but their coach, Jabar Triblett, chose his athletes that needed it most. “It does a lot of great joy to me to see a smile on the kids face. You know all of them not able to get equipment, sometimes football equipment and school is right around the corner,” said Triblett.
He said purchasing football equipment and school supplies for football season and start of school can be tough for their parents. Academy gives them a discount on football apparel at times, too. The kids were strolling through the store with smiles on their faces and new lunch boxes, back packs, and uniforms. “I want to make sure the kids are happy at all times, ” Triblett said.
The gladiators coach said Academy is setting a good example for the impressionable youth. “This should teach them how to give back also,” said Triblett. Academy has made this contribution to Baton Rouge scholars the last 9 years and hopes to continue in the future.
Here are some back to school shopping tips, to keep costs down, courtesy of TopCash:
- Reuse some of last year’s necessities- have your child them try on last year’s uniforms, and shoes and look for any left over supplies.
- Look for deals at local retailers- Louisiana will not have a back to school tax free weekend for the next several years, but some retailers will pay the 4% tax for you.
- Shop online- Avoid lines and missing sizes! Plus you tend to have more options.
- Don’t over pay for this year’s trend- hand decorate binders, folders and back packs, rather than purchasing the expensive version of basic school supplies.
