BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA/WGMB) — New Year’s Day is a time to set new goals. Women are being encouraged to put themselves first in 2020 by the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular diseases and stroke cause 1 in 3 female deaths every year, or one every 80 seconds, according to AHA. Only about half of women know that heart disease is their number one killer.

A representative from Woman’s Health, Dr. Terrie Thomas, stopped by the FOX 44 studio to discuss why women should focus on themselves in 2020.

Eighty percent of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented, according to AHA.

The American Hear Association is asking people to commit to healthy heart awareness by joining them at the 2020 Baton Rouge Go Red for Women luncheon on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Raising Cane’s River Center. Tickets are available at BatonRougeGoRed.heart.org.
