Angola inmate dies after fight; investigation underway

WEST FELICIANA PARISH, La. – A Louisiana State Penitentiary inmate could face criminal charges after a fight that left his fellow inmate dead Saturday night.

Gary Francois, 30, got into a fight with Major Jones, 32, at 8:46 p.m. Saturday. Correctional officers took Jones to the prison’s treatment center, where he died a short time later.

Jones was serving a life sentence for a second degree murder conviction out of Sabine Parish. He had been at Angola since July 6, 2017.

Francois is serving a life sentence for a second degree murder conviction out of Jefferson Parish. He has been at Angola since May 31, 2017.

Medical examiners will conduct an autopsy on Jones this week.
