As Ascension fuel runs thin, parish leaders can’t get answers

GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) – Ascension Parish gas supply is depleting, and parish officials want answers as to why it’s happening.

Gabriel Redler drove around for hours and thought he finally found gas but was stopped short of filling up.

“Normally you have gas station that have power, but now gas or you wait in line for a little bit of gas. This one has gas because the tanker came, but no power,” said Reddler.

He’s one of thousands of Ascension parish residents simply trying to find fuel.

“You find one gas station, miles long line, miles, and miles. Then you finally get there, you might get five cents of gas. You come to this one, you can’t even get five cents cause the pumps don’t turn on,” said Redler

“How are you going to get gas when you run out of gas to get gas, said Ascension parish resident Ollie Stingley.

As fuel in the parish lessen by the hour, Ascension parish leaders say they don’t understand why it’s happening.

“Why is fuel not flowing to our parish when we have which we think is an abundance of it,” said Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre.

There are two refiners near Ascension and the lack of gas is now trickling down to crews who are helping with restoration efforts.

“They needed to fuel their trucks in order to fix their lines because they were running out of fuel. the parish government in order for our operations to continue without a dedicated fuel line coming in to refuel our operations, we could not guarantee them that fuel. So, this has a ripple effect,” said Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment.

As the parish pleads to refiners for gas deliveries, people like Redler want the long lines and wait times to end.

“I hope the power turns on pretty soon her just to get a drop of gas,” said Redler.
