Ascension, Livingston toy donations reach kids in Western Kentucky

Local News

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office team tasked with driving trailers of toys to Kentucky arrived safely at their destination, according to social media. Hundreds of toys were donated by residents of Ascension and Livingston parishes after city leaders put out a call for donations.

Drivers left before daybreak Sunday morning and made their way to Mayfield, KY. The area in western Kentucky was devastated after a recent tornado outbreak struck the Midwest. Homes were demolished, churches collapsed and toys were abandoned. Families were forced to move into shelter and officials said it will take years for people to rebuild.

The toy drive was organized for children who have lost everything and will likely have nothing to unwrap come Christmas morning. Mayfield is a town of a little more than 10,000, according to the most recent census data.

“We won’t make Christmas perfect for the children, but we will make it better,” said Sheriff Bobby Webre.

The Malone family, who reside in Kentucky, sent a special note of appreciation to everyone who is assisting with recovery.
