BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC Local 33) (FOX 44) — Ascension Parish Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Rick Webre (R) has qualified to run for parish president.
Director Rick Webre released a statement about his candidacy on August 10th.
The statement can be found on Director Rick Webre’s Facebook page.
Along with Webre, candidates Murphy Painter (R), Clint Cointment (R) and Ricky Diggs (D) are also officially in the race.
Incumbent Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa will not seek another term.
Webre’s brother, Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre, released a statement which said the announcement that Rick would run for parish president was a surprise.
I learned for the first time this morning after he qualified that my brother Rick Webre is running for Parish President. I immediately met with him and let him know that I do not support his decision to run. I want to reiterate my statement from earlier this year: I am running in my own race on my own merits. I will not support or endorse any other candidate in any other race, including my brother.Statement from Sheriff Bobby Webre, August 8, 2019
Painter tells NBC Local 33 that the entry of Rick Webre came as a shock to the community, “It shocked everybody to a degree…but it’s still a race and I’m going to run my own race.”
Painter released a more formal statement on the matter.
Earlier, you asked about my feelings of Rick Weber in the race. My answer at this point is that I am running on my abilities and my proven record to always improve and make things better anywhere I have served. It is America and an election is paramount for democracy. I look forward to running my race.Murphy Painter (R)
Opponent Cointment also released a statement, that read in part:
I will not comment on another candidate in the parish president race, but I will tell you why I am running.Clint Cointment (R)
The only democratic candidate in the race Ricky Diggs, also released a statement, which read in part.
My only comment regarding Rick Webre running for parish president is simple. It is the right of all citizens to run for office and I would encourage anyone who truly loves all people and/or is concerned for all people to serve as God would have us do.Ricky Diggs (D)
