ASCENSION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — Ascension Parish drainage officials announced the opening of a gate valve at Smith Bayou Weir.

Officials said the first valve was opened at 11 a.m. on Jan. 5 and serves to draw New River water levels down within the dredging project limits of Gonzales, Geismar and parts of Dutchtown.

A second gate valve will be opened Wednesday evening.

The Drainage Department said the valve openings are part of the New River Dredging Project and low water levels may be present while work is being conducted.

Anyone with questions or concerns should call the Ascension Parish customer service center at 225-450-1200.
