BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– More sites have received the COVID- 19 vaccine as supply has become more widely available.
The Ascension Parish Health Unit received their first shipment of the vaccine earlier this week and began administering it today.
Ascension Parish Health Unit Director Christy Burnett said, “I can’t say enough about the administration for parish of Ascension, backing us on this and my staff and team here at the Gonzales Health Unit, has worked everyday since COVID-19 hit.”
The opportunity to administer the vaccine was long awaited for the Ascension Parish Health Unit.
Burnett said, “When the vaccine was approved through the state of distribution. It went directly to hospitals and then to pharmacies, nursing homes, etc. Finally it trickled down to the health unit division.”
Today they put their new resources to use and distributed their first round of vaccines.
“We have a waiting list that we are constantly calling people off of the waiting list. we are scheduling 40 patients each day and we look forward to getting the prevention process going,” said Burnett.
Parish Councilwoman, Teri Casso and her husband contracted the virus mid-last year.
Casso said, “My husband and I were both diagnosed the same day, of course we started with just a little sinusy feeling, kind of bronchial symptoms, but my husband then spiked a really high fever, so he was hospitalized.”
They now received their COVID-19 shots and urge those who can, to take every precaution possible.
She said, “We really want our community to understand that we all can be better, we all can be safe, and we are going to have our economy improve, if we all get vaccinated.”
As the number of vaccinations increase those in the medical community hope for a better and safer future.
Burnett said “people want this form of prevention. We want to be able to hug our families and have family gatherings, so the more people get vaccinated, the better off our community is going to be.”
The health unit said they were approved for a second shipment of doses and is honored to help stop the spread.
To get the vaccine shot they said you must make an appointment through the Ascension Parish Health Unit. You can make an appointment by calling the COVID-19 Vaccine Registration Hotline at (225) 450-1424.
