PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (BRPROUD) – Frank Culler, 58, of Saint Amant, was killed in a crash late Tuesday night.
Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Harrison County Fire Rescue responded to a call about a crash involving a 1997 Freightliner Semi-truck and an 18-wheeler around 11:10 p.m. on October 18.
Culler was driving the truck back from Lake City, Florida where the Ascension Parish man was helping with cleanup after Hurricane Ian, according to the Harrison County Coroner, Brian Switzer.
The truck contained equipment which was used in the cleanup.
Culler left Lake City around 3 p.m. heading west on I-10.
Around eight hours later, Culler was driving on I-10 West near the Long Beach exit.
The accident happened just west of that exit, also referred to as mile marker 28.
The Freightliner Semi-truck “collided with a 2023 Peterbilt Semi-truck driven by 51-year-old Changyi Ren of Arcadia, CA, that was parked on the westbound shoulder on Interstate 10,” according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Brian Switzer stated that Culler’s truck struck the 18-wheeler before heading off an embankment and into some trees that were off the interstate.
This caused some fuel tanks to rupture and the 1997 Freightliner Semi-truck caught fire.
The fire also engulfed some trees but was eventually extinguished and Brian Switzer confirmed that the cause of death for Frank Culler was blunt forced trauma.
The driver of the 2023 Peterbilt Semi-truck was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The investigation into this deadly crash remains ongoing.
