GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) – The Louisiana State Police are investigating after a Gonzales man was killed in a crash Sunday morning.

According to state police, troopers responded to LA 429 near Denham Road around 7 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1. Through an investigation, they learned that Steven Thomas, 42, was heading west on LA 429 in a 2010 Nissan Maxima.

LSP said Thomas went off the road and overturned after hitting a culvert. Troopers said Thomas was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene after being ejected from his vehicle.

The reason why Thomas went off the road is still being investigated.

“While not all crashes are survivable, statistics demonstrate that properly worn restraints can significantly reduce your risk of being injured or killed in a crash,” state police said. “Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most effective ways to save your life and reduce injuries in crashes.”
