SORRENTO, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash involving an impaired driver.
Police say on Tuesday night around 11:30 p.m., state troopers were called to a two-vehicle crash on I-10, east of US 61.
After an investigation, troopers learned that Joshuah Cannon, 34, of Nederland, Tx., was driving west in the eastbound lane in a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. At the same time, Jaranisha Carter, 23, of Prairieville, was driving east in a 2008 Honda Accord. Cannon and Carter collided head-on.
At the time of the crash, neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. Both were taken to a local hospital, where Carter had severe injuries and Cannon had moderate injuries. Carter later was pronounced dead.
According to police, during the on-scene investigation, Cannon reportedly showed signs of impairment and was arrested for vehicular homicide, reckless operation, DWI (third offense), driving on divided highways, and no seatbelt.
Cannon will be booked into the Ascension Parish Jail after being released from the hospital, police say.
