BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – Baton Rouge personal injury attorney Gordon McKernan held his annual Bike Giveaway Friday. Gordon gave away more than 425 free bikes in seven different cities across the state this year, including 115 bikes in Baton Rouge. In addition to bicycles, the lucky winners received safety gear donated by several physicians.
“This is something we’ve been doing for the last eight or nine years, it’s a way that we’re able to give back to the community across the state of Louisiana,” said McKernan.
Thirteen-year-old Danasia Jupiter said this will be the perfect gift for her 10-year-old brother.
“He’s gonna come home from school and he’s going to see this bike right there in the living room with a bow on it,” said Jupiter.
The annual giveaway is inspired by Gordon’s fondest childhood memory — a shiny red bike.
“I graduated from the little tricycles and I got on the next bike with the training wheels, I rode that bike over and over,” said McKernan.
He is now making it his mission every year to recreate the joy he felt for as many boys and girls as possible. After a hard year, Laura Mulkey said she is just grateful for the chance to make her grandchild smile.
“It’s everything because one thing is I lost my job last year and I’ve been driving Uber. I’ve been applying for jobs and not getting jobs so I was kind of worried about how I was going to make this happen for my grandchildren,” said Mulkey.
After canceling the give-away last year due to COVID-19, McKernan is just happy to be helping the community again.
“I believe that too much is given, much is expected,” said McKernan.
