BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) — With Mother’s Day and summer vacations coming up, the Baton Rouge airport prepares for an increase in business while also maintaining COVID-19 procedures.
The COVID-19 pandemic grounded the airline industry, “we’ve been running down more like 53, 55%,” says Jim Caldwell with the Baton Rouge airport.
But that is changing, “more people have gotten vaccinated. They’re more comfortable with flying,” Caldwell says.
“Advanced bookings are strong. A lot of pent-up demand. A lot of people ready to take a vacation and business travel is coming back a little more slowly, but it’s starting to return and they expect to see a big improvement in the second half of the year,” Caldwell says.
Caldwell says the airport is even introducing new options to meet the demand, “we’ve got a new carrier called Southeast Beach Express and they’re going to fly four times a week. Thursday through Sunday is nonstop from Baton Rouge to Gulf shores, Alabama.”
Safety precautions are still in place. “We still require masks both in the airport and the airlines on the aircraft. The spacing is still required, they’ve been a little more flexible with it. But essentially nothing has changed regarding that at this time,” Caldwell says.
Caldwell says that will not slow down your time at the airport, “we expect people to get here hour to an hour and a half before flight departure. We’re pretty easy airport. You parked terminal front and can get through TSA check-in pretty quickly… just wear a mask and come through and go enjoy your trip.”
