BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A 37-year-old man who was employed as a pediatric cardiologist at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital (OLOL) has been arrested on over 100 counts of child pornography and 50 counts of video voyeurism.
According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO), Antonio Belda, 37, of Baton Rouge, was arrested Wednesday on 130 counts of child pornography and 50 counts of video voyeurism.
The investigation into Belda began when an EBRSO Sergeant and the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation Cyber Crime Unit were tasked with reviewing a Google complaint that was sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
Arrest documents reveal that 48 images of child pornography were attributed to Belda’s IP address.
The complaint became a ‘high priority’ as Belda was employed as a pediatric cardiologist.
OLOL confirmed that Belda was a former staff member and issued a statement regarding his employment and the charges made against him.
We are shocked to learn of the disturbing allegations against one of our recently employed physicians. When we became aware of these charges and arrest at his home this morning, the physician was immediately terminated with no further patient or staff contact. Our physician hiring process is extremely rigorous and includes background checks, multiple reference checks and other nationally recognized best practices. We will continue to cooperate fully with our law enforcement partners. As always, the safety and care of our patients and team members is our top priority.Alexandra Deiro Stubbs, MBA, Director of Public Relations
An affidavit confirms that Belda’s home was searched by agents from Louisiana State Police, Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Cyber Crime Unit Wednesday.
During the search, agents found several electronic devices containing hundreds of images/videos of child pornography.
EBRSO detectives told BRProud there is no reason to believe the images depict any local patients.
Belda was booked in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of child pornography and video voyeurism. His bond was set at $130,000.
