BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC Local 33) (FOX 44) — Grandparents Raising Grandchildren partnered with the national organizations UnitedHealthcare and Sesame Street for National Grandparents Day in Baton Rouge today.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a local organization geared toward grandparents finding themselves raising grandchildren and feeling as if they have no where to go and no one to talk with regarding their situation. Today’s event was dedicated to Dot Thibodeaux, one of the co-founders of the organization who passed away unexpectedly in June.
Today’s event ‘Growing Every Day, Every Way,’ aimed to bring grandparents and their families together for nutritious giveaways, healthy activities and a visit from Sesame Street character Elmo.
The event also provided families and care-giving grandparents with resources to help access affordable and nutritious food and offer easy ways for families to incorporate physical activity into daily life.
In 2014, about 2.7 million grandparents were “grandparent caregivers” (those who had primary responsibility for grandchildren under 18 years living with them), according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 report. Within those households, more than 40 percent reported having unmet economic or social-service needs.
National Grandparents Day is September 8.
