BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Baton Rouge has experienced its first homicide of the new year.

Late on Wednesday (Jan. 4), shots were fired in front of the Triple S Food Mart. The Baton Rouge Police Department identified the victim as 22-year-old Illya Antwine “TJ” Winns Jr.

This is the first homicide of 2023, and nonprofits say they are already tired of the crime.

“We have too many TJs that we’re losing on our streets every single day,” said Dadrius Lanus, Executive Director of 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge.

Geno McLaughlin, a community activist, agreed with Lanus.

“We have a responsibility to protect our own. These are our streets. These are our family members. These are our brothers, sisters, cousins, and uncles. And so if we can’t protect our own, then who will,” McLaughlin said.
