BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Baton Rouge police are investigating another deadly shooting at the OYO Hotel off Airline Highway.
City leaders said the hotel is a hotspot for crime. The hotel neighbors a Walmart and church across the street. Residents in the area said crime at the area motels is too common.
“The hotel had 85 EMS calls last year, the highest number of EMS calls within the parish,” said City-Parish Chief Administrative Officer Darryl Gissel.
District Attorney Hillar Moore says he wants to work with hotel owners to investigate what’s causing the problems at the hotel. He says hotels and motels are known to attract drug activity. This year police have reported to 114 calls and two fatal overdoses at the OYO.
Baton Rouge is coming off a record-breaking 300 overdose deaths in 2021.
“It’s not only addressing the issue of the hotel, but the issue of that person,” said Moore. “But, can we get you help?”
Moore says he’s not trying to put anyone out of business but to figure out what law enforcement can do better to slow down crime.
“We are going to continue to look at this location to determine whether we have enough statutory violations to serve a letter to the manager, to put them on notice that we believe this is a nuisance,” said Moore.
