BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge man was indicted on 15 counts including charges of wire fraud, extortion, attempted escape and assault on an officer, according to U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Gathe Jr.

Gathe says the indictment showed between the summer of 2017 and March 2022, 52-year-old Monty Matthews developed a fraud scheme targeting the elderly, which resulted in a loss of over one million dollars. Matthews allegedly sent false and threatening messages to victims.

Matthews was arrested on March 23, 2022, however, he attempted to escape custody while assaulting two FBI special agents, according to Gathe.
