BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)- For the past month Tereca and her husband have been traveling back and forth to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee to receive care for their 9 year-old, Mason, fighting leukemia.
After hearing this story professional boxer Regies Prograis, decided to do something special. Prograis paid three months of rent for Tereca while she takes care of her family of five during the holiday season.
“For someone to come and help us out, it’s a blessing,” Tereca said.
“I am very blessed and I just want to help,” Prograis said.
Since Mason is hospitalized 5 hours away Tereca and her husband take turns working. With the stress of driving to St.Jude, taking care of two other kids and Mason’s health, Tereca left her job.
“It’s been crazy trying to juggle everything, with two kids at home, trying to be with Mason and my husband,” Tereca said. “We haven’t been together as a family, the kids miss their brother.”
Giving back to Tereca’s family hit close to home for Regies because he lost his uncle to leukemia.
“Most people don’t know this about me, but I come from the same type of environment,” he said. “I just want to help the people.”
Regies partnered with local nonprofit United Strengths who connected Regies with the family.
“We were searching for a family and we heard about them through our board members,” said Scofield Grant, United Strengths. “We heard the story, they aren’t getting any assistance. They were the perfect candidate. It feels great to giveback.”
The infection was spreading to Masons’ entire body, with treatment he is able to walk again.
The mother of three says this time has challenged her to remain positive for her family. She wants those who are suffering through hardships during the holiday season and global pandemic to do the same.
“Just keep faith and believe in God, it will all work out,” she said.
United Strengths will continue to provided resources and donations to families in need. Those who want to donate to United Strengths can do so by visiting here.
