BATON ROUGE, La. (BRRPOUD) — Recent fights and violence on Baton Rouge school campuses sparked passionate debate at last night’s school board meeting.

While board members were inside, members of the East Baton Rouge Parish Association of Educators were outside protesting about their safety. Teachers say they are afraid to be in class.
The board voted to implement a policy for violence in the workplace and reassured teachers they would see changes.

“Last week, and over the course of the last few months, we’ve had some serious concerns from people all across our district as it pertains to safety inside of our schools,” said Dadrius Lanus, EBR Schools board member. “Some will say that tonight change in policies is a Band-Aid.
What I would say is it is a step in the right direction and is one that shows that we are not going to stand for violence happening inside of our schools, whether it pertains to our parents, our students or even law enforcement.”

The school board plans to also let teachers express more of their concerns through an anonymous survey.
