BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Police Department is providing self-defense courses to women this summer to give them the tools they need in the event of an attack.

The personal safety course is taught by certified law enforcement officers.

“We are not always around the corner,” said BRPD Cpl. Wallace Britton. “Calling the police, we will come to your aid, but in the meantime, you need to have some skills and have some knowledge about how to take care of yourself.”

Britton said almost all attack victims are women.

“About 80% of attackers, the victim knows the attacker, which is kind of scary,” Britton said.

Upcoming courses will be on June 12, 14, 19 and 21 from 6-9 p.m. at BRPD’s training facility on Airline Highway. Click here to register.

Participants must be 12 years old and older.

“We’ve gotten women that will tell us ‘Hey, I thought I knew what I was doing, I thought I knew how to do this, but I wasn’t expecting this situation,'” said Britton.

Self-defense courses fill up fast, but Britton said, “If it says that we are full, don’t worry about that, we want you to come anyway.”

Attendees are recommended to dress comfortably and bring a snack and or beverage.
