BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A Baton Rouge police officer was arrested in connection to a deadly car accident that happened on Friday, Oct. 20.
Caleb James Chappetta, 38, was killed in a wreck with a police unit responding to a call along Government Street around 10:26 p.m. Police said eight other vehicles were involved in the crash.
BRPD said other police units were trying to make contact with armed suspects who fired at the police around Government and South 16th Street when the crash happened.
According to police, Officer Sharmaine Buckley, 28, ran the traffic signal in her marked unit and crashed into Chappetta’s black Chevrolet Impala. Buckley was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for negligent homicide, two counts of negligent injuring, reckless operation of a vehicle and emergency vehicles: exceptions.
Police said Buckley was placed on administrative leave and is a two-year veteran assigned to the uniform patrol division.
