BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Baton Rouge Water Company, Parish Water Company and Ascension Water Company water source is not affected by the saltwater intrusion in the Mississippi River, officials said Monday.

The Baton Rouge Water Company said that its water supply comes from groundwater aquifers and operates 100 wells across the city and its surrounding parishes. The aquifers protect the water from the saltwater wedge and other contaminations that could be found in surface water.

“The water we receive in our taps travels through 140 miles through rock and sand formations to Baton Rouge. It’s a long process. Further, although the water we provide goes through a very effective natural purification process as it travels those 140 miles, we still treat it to exacting tolerances before sending it to our customers,” a news release said.

These wells operate at various depths within the Southern Hills Aquifer sands and keep the area’s drinking water pristine when the tap is turned on.
