BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — According to Best Friends Animal Rescue, over 10,000 cats and dogs are euthanized annually. But Cat Haven animal shelter recommends that the state changes that and helps adopt animals.

“We are a no-kill shelter. We house up to around 75 cats and kittens at a time and we do have around 60, 65 cats and kittens in foster care. So, we do really try to save cats,” said Holly Carey, Cat Haven Executive Director.

Grace Sutton is a first-time adopter, who is glad to bring home a new addition to the family. She said it’s important to connect with them before introducing them to a new environment.

“You should make sure y’all vibe with each other. I feel like if you get a cat it’s a lifelong commitment,” said Sutton.

Carey also said to bond with the cat first.

“You really want to come in and meet the cat to see if you bond with them,” said Carey.

Adoption fees for kittens six months and under are $135, and cats older than six months are $125. Carey said those fees cover the necessities for adopting a pet.

“Spay and neuter, all the vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, treating for flees. So, it really covers a lot. Adopt don’t shop,” said Carey.

Starting Aug. 17 through Aug. 20, adoption fees will be cut in half.

Cat Haven is always accepting donations and kitty litter is in high demand.
