BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A 17-year-old from Denham Springs accused of killing an 11-year-old in March was formally charged with murder Wednesday.

Shooting suspect Kelton Maloid, according to court documents, was indicted on charges of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Baton Rouge police said the shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. in the 5600 block of Crestway Avenue on March 16. The boy victim, Matthew Fortenberry, was reportedly held hostage with his family before his shooting death.

A BRPD spokesperson said Maloid was being shot at as he fled the scene and returned fire into a car where Fortenberry was sitting.

Maloid remains in juvenile custody, court records said.
