BBB issues new warning for COVID-19 test scams

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning people of fraudulent coronavirus tests, vaccines and treatments.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, since the arrival of the Omicron variant, the increase of testing for COVID-19 has become a concern. Even as there is a shortage of COVID-19 tests, scammers are out to get unsuspecting victims.

“Any time there is a natural disaster scammers are looking out to take advantage of consumers,” said President of the South Central BBB Carmen Million. “People are desperate to get the test, it’s supply and demand and when you can’t meet that demand they’re going to try and find it somewhere else.”

While the Omicron variant now accounts for more than 90% of cases in the state, rapid tests are hard to come by. Million said your desperation may cost you.

“When we’re talking about your financial identity, it may take years to solve it,” said Million.

According to BBB, the most recent scams have been fake pop-up testing sites and robocalls promising to send you a testing kit in return for your personal information.

“They’re going to supposedly test and give you results, but before they do the test they need your personal financial information, they need your medical information,” said Million.

In most cases, you don’t receive valid results.

“Take control of the conversation, and if they won’t allow you to get the information you need, their name, their address, their phone number, their credentials, whatever the case may be… then you need to disconnect,” said Million.

The BBB recommends doing your research and verifying with your doctor or health department for valid testing availability and options.
