BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – Many business owners found themselves closing their doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, one local business owner was able to put a spin on her style and take her decorating business to new heights.
Latkeith Dennis is the owner of LK Party Designs. It’s a top notch event decorating company that takes your wildest and most creative ideas and brings them to life. It’s a business she says started from her love for beautiful decor and planning birthday parties for her children.
Family and friends often suggested that she go into the business as more than just a hobby but she never anticipated doing so and it actually took a bit of convincing.
In November of 2018, she finally caved and agreed to do the first event outside of her children’s parties. It was a unicorn birthday event in Zachary, La. With the posting of those pictures, her event business took off and she hasn’t looked back since. One would think that with social distancing measures being set in place and the closing of venues, an event planning business should have come to a standstill but instead her schedule became jam packed.
“Believe it or not, the pandemic has actually helped my business grow,” says Dennis. “As people began attempting to regain some sense of normalcy in their lives, that meant more outside events. I had to get creative with spacing and decor to allow my clients to have successful social distanced events.” That outdoor event was a circus themed birthday party. What makes running the business even more enjoyable is the fact that she runs it with her children.
16-year old Jasmine Matthews is the brains behind the graphic designs. She says her approach to each design is really understanding what the client wants. From there, she lets her mind run wild and does some research to bring the graphics to life. Her favorite design was Nike themed that she recreated for a birthday paint party and it’s quite easy to see why.
The straight-A student athlete, recently joined LHSAA’s 1,000 point club after achieving over 1,000 career points in basketball in her Freshman and Sophomore seasons. She ended the 2020-2021 season with 1,041 career points.
Now a Junior, eyes are set on college as she is ranked 4th in the state in basketball and already has four college offers on the table. They come from University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the University of New Orleans, Grambling State University and University of Louisiana at Monroe. She’s not ready to say just yet where she wants to play college ball.
14-year old Tramya Richardson is the mastermind behind all of the balloon designs. She started playing with balloons at home making different garlands and centerpieces. The rest is history. When asked where she finds balloon inspiration, she said Tik Tok gives her lots of ideas. There isn’t a single design that has been her favorite. Each one is unique and is her favorite when it is complete.
Like her older sister, Richardson is a force to be reckoned with. She was Student of the Year in both 5th and 8th grade, Middle School Salutatorian and currently holds a 4.0 gpa.
In her Freshman season, you can even catch her racking up her own points on the basketball court as well. Together the girls have put up 40 points combined in a single game.
The girls say their mom truly inspires them. “My mom is going to get things done,” said Tramya. No matter how hard things get she’s not going to let you down. She’s going to work it out.”
Dennis is the true definition of a mother on a mission. Not only is she running a successful business, she’s also a Mental Health Therapist full-time. She recently opened two event spaces in the LaPlace area. When she and her family returned from Hurricane Ida evacuation they were met with some destruction but their faith is still towering high.
Aside from losing their home, the smaller venue called “The Spot” is unfortunately closed for renovations. The entire space had to be completely gutted and is not slated for completion until sometime in December. The larger one called “The Grand” is currently the only event space in the LaPlace area that is able to have events post Ida.
“You can’t tell me that this isn’t God. I’m so grateful and thankful that the Lord has his hand on my life. There was destruction all around my larger venue and other than a few damaged ceiling tiles at the entrance, my venue was untouched and is operable. God has truly been good to us.”
As a single mother of three, she always pushes herself even when she is weary so that she can continue to be the example and role model that she has always been for her children. There are times when Dennis says she’s literally running off of about 12 hours of sleep for the whole weekend.
“I can’t let my kids see me fold under pressure. When you are designing events and parties nothing ever goes as planned. When that happens I have to take a second to regroup but the job has to be done.”
We know just how easy it is for things to not go as planned. If you ask Ms. Dennis, she’ll tell you that the morning of my Saints vs Tampa Bay Baby Shower everything that could go wrong did.
In the end, Dennis and her daughters pulled everything together in record time. Unless you knew already, no one could tell how we both were trying to remain as calm as possible in the midst of day of chaos. I was very pleased with the outcome.
Their work was top of the line and they were all very professional. Needless to say, we’ve already booked her for an event next year.
A perfectionist at heart Latkeith Dennis says there’s still so much to do. ”I definitely have some things on my goal list and I will work them in as we wrap up the year,” says Dennis.
If you’re in love with the work you’ve seen in all of the pictures above, keep in mind that 2021 is completely booked.
The 2022 schedule will open for booking on New Years Eve. You may want to set your alarm because her book fill up extremely fast.
