Black restaurant week in Baton Rouge preview

Local News

In an effort to follow a new nationwide trend and expand local businesses, this week is dedicated to black-owned restaurants in Baton Rouge.

BRProud.com caught up with Elvondae Rayvon, owner of downtown restaurant Pit-N-Peel Monday, who tells us he’s using this week as an opportunity to turn things around.

You may remember, Pit-N-Peel was broken into back in March. Famished burglars made off with four-hundred pounds of crawfish, worth more than $1,200.

This week, Rayvon tells us he is looking forward and hoping this special promotion to support black restaurants will help them eat up a profit.

“I still get you know people who come by and say man im sorry about what happened,” said Rayvon.

“I didn’t sleep for weeks. You know, I found myself back and forth – you know, here at the building in the middle of the night and early mornings thinking that they were coming back.”

Although those wounds cut deep, Rayvon tells us the community helped heal them.

The Government Street restaurant is one of the many participating in the week long event created to bring people together and support black businesses.

The most recent numbers from the National Restaurant Association show the number of black-owned restaurants is growing by 49 percent.

But it’s about more than numbers for Rayvon, it’s about feeding your soul.

“I take pride in being here everyday and making sure that I meet the customers and give them their feel based on their need.”

According to the Rouge Collection, Black Restaurant Week is September 10-15.

Participating restaurants will offer a special discount or menu option for black restaurant week.

Get out and support these locally owned restaurants and take photos while you’re there, use the hashtags #EatBlackBR or #BlackRestaurantWeekBR for a chance to win free lunch on them.
