BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A new book published adds tales to the rich history of LSU as it recounts the “glory days” of the LSU Assembly Center as a music venue.

The 114-page coffee-table-style book titled The Greatest Shows on Earth authored by the first LSU Assembly Center director, Dr. William Bankhead, shows readers a peak behind the curtain at some of the biggest concerts played at the facility between 1972 and 1982.

“I’m very grateful the LSU Press will have my book in their catalog next year, but my intention was to honor the Assembly Center during this 50th anniversary year,” Bankhead explained. “I’m humbly excited to share this labor of love at this time. I’m impressed with the way it turned out – it’s a balance of information and storytelling with great graphics and color.”

Readers can find images of posters, ticket stubs, photos and celebrity autographs on the book’s pages. The Greatest Shows on Earth is available for purchase online at

A book signing will take place on Friday, Nov. 18 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. outside of the gift shop at Lod Cook Hotel on campus.
