Brain eating amoeba found in water line

BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) - One Louisiana parish isn't taking any chances after a brain eating amoeba was discovered in their water line.

The amoeba was discovered in Terrebonne Parish by Consolidated waterworks, who provides water to Parish. Officials say the company hired an independent firm to conduct testing and discovered an amoeba at the end of the distribution line. Fortunately, health officials say you cannot be infected by the amoeba by drinking water. It is only dangerous if the water goes up your nose.

"We would encourage people not to go slip and sliding without some kind of restrain on their nasal passage keeping it closed. If you have swimming pools make sure your chlorine in that pool is up to par. To kill bacteria, nothing works better than plain old straight chlorine. The state has allowed us this tool in our toolbox to change disinfectants to try and get the system in tip top shape," said Consolidated Waterworks Director Michael Sobert.

This is the third time in the past year an amoeba has been detected in Terrebonne Parish.
