BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge Police officer was arrested Wednesday morning and is accused of hitting a woman with his work gun.

According to BRPD, detectives were informed of a domestic abuse incident between a female victim and Officer Michael Mitchell, a three-year veteran assigned to Uniform Patrol. The two reportedly live together and have children.

Detectives discovered the victim told her friends about a domestic incident that reportedly happened in late September 2022. Mitchell allegedly accused the victim of having an affair, which led to an argument between the two. The victim said Mitchell pointed a gun at her and threatened her. He then reportedly hit her in the face with a gun.

Detectives spoke with a friend who received a detailed report from the victim about what happened the night of the alleged incident. The victim reportedly told the friend Mitchell came home from work, in uniform, pulled out his duty weapon and began yelling. The witness told authorities that during the argument, Mitchell hit her with the gun, causing damage near her eye. When authorities interviewed other friends, they also told detectives about the cut above the victim’s eye.

According to official documents, the victim would not give a statement. The victim stated that she and Mitchell only had an argument.

Detectives were able to search the victim’s phone and saw evidence in the conversation with Mitchell. Messages reportedly alluded to him hitting her with his gun. Detectives say they also found messages from Mitchell threatening to shoot the victim and telling her to lie about her injury.

Mitchell was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of domestic abuse battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic abuse aggravated assault and malfeasance in office.

Authorities say Mitchell has been placed on administrative leave until after the investigation.
