BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)– Nearly 800 to 1,400 jobs are heading to the Capitol City. The Baton Rouge Metro Airport (BTR) is partnering with a private company in hopes of bringing more money to the area.

“We just really couldn’t be more excited about the potential economic development and permanent job creation here in North Baton Rouge,” said Mike Edwards, BTR’s Director of Aviation.

BTR said 53 acres of their vacant land in their Aviation Business Park, will soon transform into a hotspot for business.

“Our strategic plan is to develop the aviation business park to its full potential and to secure a master developer for this certified site. So the timing was really perfect,” stated Edwards.

Private developer, Burrell Aviation, has answered their call. They are leasing the land in hopes of bringing new companies to the area.

“Over the next 36 months, they’ll go out and market the site to sub tenants who they will then enter into agreements with,” he explained

Edwards said some of these tenants may specialize in things like E-commerce, cold storage and air cargo, untapped markets they’ve been itching to break into.

“Currently, we do not have any air cargo operating here at BTR. So, this is going to help us compete with other airports and make the capital region more competitive,” said Edwards.

The lease itself will bring about $500,000, and that’s not including the landing fees that will generate money.

“A large portion of our operating budget is funded through revenue that the airport generates from lease agreements, so this will be our largest airfield lease in the history of the airport,” he explained. “The potential for the economic output on this project is extremely impactful for North Baton Rouge.”

Components like an air traffic control tower, ample runway length, and significant airfield capabilities are features BTR said makes their airport the perfect place for growth.
